St. Peter's Cemetery
St. Peter's CemeteryHoliday in Salzburg: a visit to St. Peter's Cemetery
A unique ambiance awaits you at the historic cemetery of St. Peter under the shade of the mighty Hohensalzburg Fortress. A visit is definitely worthwhile!
The cemetery of the monastery of Saint Peter, known as Peter's cemetery, is one of the oldest Christian burial places in Salzburg, together with the cemetery of the Nonnberg monastery. These places were already used as burial sites in the post-Roman period. The picturesque surroundings and idyllic location at the foot of the Festungberg made Peter's cemetery a beloved subject of art and poetry in the 19th century.
Wrought-iron crosses, impressive crypts and the exquisite church of St. Peter make this a visit not to be missed. Catacombs, which were built into the Festungsberg, are to be found on the edge of Peter's cemetery. The catacombs may only be visited with guided tours - the staff at IMLAUER Hotels will be pleased to book a place on a tour for you. In the centre of the cemetery is the Margaret Chapel. This small church is a uniform late gothic hall and was erected in honour of Saint Margaret. The gravestones of many noblemen and women have been mounted on the external facade of the church.
You should also not miss a chance to visit the historic bakery of St. Peter where you can taste bread fresh from the wooden ovens. A true insider tip for Salzburg!
