The festival hall was opened in 1960 with a performance of Der Rosenkavalier (The Rose Cavalier) conducted by Herbert von Karajan. The former "Small Festival Hall" was reopened in the year of Mozart 2007 following modifications and now bears the name "House for Mozart". Further stages for the Salzburg festivals are provided by the Felsenreitschule, part of it carved from the rock of the Mönchsberg.
